Laos has recorded 142 new cases of Covid-19 over the past twenty-four hours with 83 cases detected in Savannakhet, 45 in Champassak, 11 in Vientiane, and one each in Saravan, Khammuan and Borikhamxay.
No local transmissions have been reported over the past hours with Vientiane witnessing 11 consecutive days of no local infections.
The newly reported cases, all imported from neighbouring countries, were detected among 1,353 receiving Covid-19 test yesterday.
Of the imported cases, delta variant currently shares 35%.
“I would like to ask Lao workers or other fellow citizens working in Thailand who wish to return to Laos to return to the country legally according to the notice of the National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control so that they will be screened, have their samples collected and sent to quarantine centres, thus those infected will be given prompt treatment and consequently we can prevent the virus from infecting local people,” said on Sunday Director General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control, Ministry of Health, Rattanaxay Phethsouvanh.
The total of cumulative confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the country currently stands at 4,762 including 2,018 active cases and five deaths.
Globally, over 194.48 million people have been infected with Covid-19 with over 472,000 new cases reported over the past twenty-four hours. Meanwhile more than 4.16 million people have died of the disease and over 176.4 million people have recovered from the disease worldwide.
Among the countries bordering Laos, Thailand is the most hard-hit by Covid-19 pandemic with 14,260 new cases reported over the past twenty-four hours meanwhile another neighbour Myanmar has recorded the highest daily death toll at 297 over the past 24 hours.
