Attapeu Province Pushes for Road and Tourism Infrastructure Development

Attapeu:Provincial officials have urged the government to expedite road repair projects and boost investment in tourism infrastructure to enhance connectivity and economic growth in the region.

According to Lao News Agency, Mr. Bountheung Douangsavanh, Provincial Party Secretary and Chairman of the Attapeu Provincial People's Council, emphasized this need during the second ordinary session of the 10th National Assembly on October 6, 2026.

He specifically highlighted the necessity of upgrading major roads, including Routes 18A, 18B, and 18D, which connect Attapeu with neighboring provinces and international borders. Route 18D, a significant trade route extending 112 km to the Phou Heua border with Vietnam, requires rehabilitation due to heavy truck traffic. Discussions are ongoing regarding a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) arrangement to finance this project.

Additionally, Mr. Bountheung called for enhancements to Route 18A, which connects Attapeu with Route 13, facilitating access to Thailand. Improving these routes is seen as crucial for solidifying Attapeu's position as a regional hub linking Laos with Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

In terms of tourism, Mr. Bountheung advocated for government funding to enhance access and facilities at key natural attractions like Nong Fa Lake, Tad Hua Khon, Tad Safpha, and Tat Tha Phap. He believes that developing these sites could increase both domestic and international tourism, benefiting local communities.

The province intends to leverage local revenue, state budget support, and private investment to accelerate infrastructure and tourism projects, aiming for sustainable economic development.
