Comprehensive Sexuality Education Faces Challenges in Vocational Schools

Vientiane:Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) initiatives in vocational schools are evolving, with a focus on student engagement and practical teaching methods. As students navigate the complexities of communal living, especially in dormitories, issues such as the consumption of kratom-infused drinks have emerged among small groups.

According to Lao News Agency, Sommoud, who transitioned from being a political science teacher to a master trainer in sexuality education, has been integral to this initiative. His involvement deepened in 2018 with the Department of Vocational Education's collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to develop CSE teaching manuals. Sommoud has since played a key role in training other educators to integrate CSE into various subjects and activities.

At Dongkhamxang Agriculture Technical College, CSE messages are conveyed through homeroom teachers, existing subjects, and interactive methods like drama and role-play. These approaches help students practically explore sexual health, relationships, and decision-making scenarios.

Sommoud has noted improvements in students' awareness and a greater willingness among teachers to engage in discussions about sexuality education. However, the absence of dedicated teaching hours for CSE in the vocational curriculum poses a challenge, requiring teachers to incorporate CSE into other subjects or organize extracurricular activities.

Sommoud advocates for formal inclusion of CSE in the vocational curriculum with allocated teaching hours. He also emphasizes the need for video-based learning materials, aligning with students' preferences for engaging content over traditional printed materials.

The UNFPA Representative in Lao PDR highlighted the significance of teachers' experiences in shaping CSE to address challenges like peer pressure, online influences, and health issues. They commended Sommoud's approach, which prioritizes practical teaching methods and a curriculum that prepares students for real-world risks.

Sommoud's ongoing efforts at the college aim to enhance students' understanding of themselves, foster respect for others, and encourage seeking support, complementing their technical education with essential life skills.
