(KPL): The Committee on Lao Overseas Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Lao Front for National Development, held the first annual gathering for people of Lao race living abroad on November 12, 2024, in Vientiane under the theme ‘Love Homeland.’ The event was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith.
According to Lao News Agency, Mr. Saleumxay, who also serves as chairman of the committee, highlighted the event’s role in strengthening connections between the Lao diaspora and their motherland. The gathering was designed to provide a valuable forum for Lao expatriates to reconnect, engage in meaningful dialogue, and contribute to the socio-economic development of the Lao PDR.
Topics discussed during the event included investment opportunities in the hospitality, education, and agriculture sectors. This offered the diaspora a platform to explore these areas and gain a deeper understanding of socio-economic development in the Lao PDR. Current
ly, approximately 981,900 Lao nationals live across 18 countries globally, playing a crucial role in preserving Lao culture and promoting a positive image of their homeland internationally. Recognizing their contributions, the Lao government has issued Decree No. 475 to streamline visa and residency procedures for returning nationals and to encourage their involvement in national development.
Key speakers at the gathering included Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bounleua Phandanouvong and Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Phonevanh Outhavong. Representatives from the diaspora also shared insights on Lao cultural preservation, business opportunities, and the role of skilled human resources in Laos. The event will conclude with open discussions, allowing attendees to share proposals and perspectives. This underscores the Lao government’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with Lao nationals abroad and valuing their contributions to the country’s development.
