Rome: Italy is at the forefront in Europe when it comes to fatalities resulting from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, with approximately 12,000 deaths occurring each year.
According to Lao News Agency, an Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) report, featured on the FarmaciaVirtuale website, highlights that Italy’s population is the most impacted by antibiotic resistance among European Union (EU) nations. The report utilizes data from the latest surveillance findings published by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The ECDC cautions that if current trends persist, antibiotic resistance could become the leading cause of death in Italy by 2050, overtaking cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
The specialized publication states that around 35,000 people succumb annually to antibiotic-resistant infections across Europe, with one in five bacterial infections already exhibiting drug resistance. The study forecasts that annual deaths could climb to 390,000 over the next quarte
r-century, emphasizing the critical need for academia and the pharmaceutical industry to focus on developing new and more effective drugs to combat this escalating threat.
