At the recent BRICS and Developing Countries Summit in Kazan, Russia, the Presidents of Laos and Russia pledged to strengthen their partnership and enhance cooperation in economic development and regional initiatives.
President Thongloun Sisoulith and Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed their commitment to mutual support in multilateral frameworks, including BRICS and other global forums. The leaders discussed furthering collaboration on international issues affecting both nations, according to the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two presidents highlighted the positive outcomes of past Laos-Russia cooperation, especially in politics, defense, peacekeeping, and education. They expressed intentions to advance agreements from President Thongloun’s May visit to Russia, focusing on economic relations, trade, investment, energy, transportation, science, technology, and tourism.
President Thongloun thanked Russia for its ongoing support, noting its role in Laos’ socio-economic development, and congra
tulated Russia on hosting the 2024 BRICS Summit and taking on the BRICS chairmanship. In response, President Putin praised Laos for its participation in the summit, describing it as a valuable contribution to strengthening ties with Russia. He also commended Laos’ successful hosting of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits this month, underscoring the country’s growing role in regional diplomacy and cooperation.
