Laos Economy Experiences 4.8% Growth in Early 2026

Vientiane:Laos' economy saw a 4.8% growth in the first nine months of 2026, driven by several key sectors.

According to Lao News Agency, the economic expansion was bolstered by growth in processing and manufacturing, increased private-sector investment, and higher electricity production, which now includes wind power generation. The wholesale and retail trade, public services, as well as accommodation and food services, also contributed to this growth, benefiting from a tourism industry that is rebounding.

International tourist arrivals rose by 7% compared to the same period last year, providing a boost to businesses related to tourism.

Despite these gains, the agricultural sector is facing challenges and might not meet its annual targets. The sector has been affected by rising fuel prices, which have pushed up production and transport costs. Additionally, outbreaks of African Swine Fever and natural disasters have inflicted further losses and disrupted farming activities.

Preliminary estimates suggest that the economy will grow by 5.1% for the entire year, which is below the 5.5% growth target established by the National Assembly.
