Laos Praised for Successful ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024


VIENTIANE: Laos received commendation for its effective leadership as the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2024, as highlighted during a review meeting of the National Steering Committee. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, who recognized the collaborative efforts that contributed to the successful chairmanship.

According to Lao News Agency, the meeting featured presentations from representatives of 14 sub-committees responsible for overseeing ASEAN events throughout the year. These representatives shared their success stories, identified challenges encountered, and proposed strategies for enhancing the organization of future events. The chairmanship was conducted under the theme, ‘ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience,’ which aligns with the Lao government’s vision of transforming its landlocked status into a hub for regional integration.

Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone praised the contributions of the sub-committees, ministries, businesses,
and provincial authorities to the success of Laos’ ASEAN chairmanship. He emphasized the importance of applying lessons learned from this experience to improve the organization of future regional and global gatherings hosted by Laos. The prime minister highlighted the theme’s significance in promoting ASEAN’s collective goals of fostering connectivity, resilience, and adaptability amidst global challenges.

The success of Laos’ chairmanship was attributed to the concerted efforts of various sectors, including government ministries, the general public, businesses, the military, and police. Their collaboration has been instrumental in showcasing Laos as a capable and forward-thinking member of ASEAN.
