Laos reports over 1,200 new Covid-19 infections

Some 1,263 new cases of Covid-19 and one new fatality attributed to the Coronavirus have been recorded over the past 24 hours, according to the National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.

Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control, Ministry of Health Dr Rattanaxay Phetsouvanh told a press conference this morning that the new infections were detected among 3,134 samples tested for Covid-19 nationwide on Sunday. Some 426 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals nationwide yesterday.

The new daily cases of Covid-19 included 1,236 domestic transmissions and 27 imported cases with Vientiane reporting the largest number of domestic infections of 501 followed by Khammuan 118, Vientiane (province) 81, Savannakhet 78, Xayaboury 77, Borikhamxay 66, Attapeu 65 and Huaphan 55.

The total caseload of Covid-19 in the Lao PDR has reached 169,256 including 661 deaths and 6,510 active cases.

Last week, the Prime Minister’s Office issued a notice stating that public offices at central and provincial levels are prohibited from organizing festive parties during the celebration of Pi Mai Lao or Lao New Year B.E 2565.

The notice, dated 23 Mar 2022, also advises the celebration to be organized in a thrifty manner.

Central and provincial Covid-19 taskforces were also urged to translate the Prime Minister’s notice into detailed instructions to ensure relevant authorities comply with anti-Covid-19 restrictions during Pi Mai.
