Malaysia Marks National Days in Vientiane with Diplomatic Reception


Vientiane: The Embassy of Malaysia in the Lao PDR hosted a reception to commemorate the 68th National Day of Malaysia, 62nd Malaysia Day, and 92nd Malaysian Armed Forces Day held in Vientiane on September 12. The event was led by Ambassador of Malaysia to the Lao PDR, Mr. Edi Irwan Mahmud, and attended by Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Ms. Suanesavanh Vignaket, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Maythong Thammavongsa, along with ambassadors, ministers, and representatives from various international organizations.



According to Lao News Agency, Ambassador Edi Irwan, in his welcoming remarks, highlighted the significance of the national celebrations, emphasizing Malaysia’s history and identity. He noted that every year on August 31, Malaysians commemorate their nation’s independence in 1957, a pivotal moment marking the birth of a sovereign, united, and multi-ethnic Malaya.



The ambassador also discussed the importance of Malaysia Day on September 16, celebrating the 1963 formation of Malaysia with the inclusion of Sabah and Sarawak, coinciding with the Malaysian Armed Forces Day, first observed in 1933. He remarked that these milestones honor Malaysia’s past and offer an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s journey.



Looking towards the future, Ambassador Edi Irwan mentioned Malaysia’s readiness to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, a role to be passed on by Laos. Under the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability,’ Malaysia aims to promote a peaceful, resilient, and prosperous ASEAN region.



Further, the ambassador highlighted an upcoming milestone in Malaysia-Laos relations. The Prime Ministers of both countries, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sonexay Siphandone, have agreed to jointly celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026. This occasion will be marked with joint initiatives and celebrations, reflecting six decades of friendship and cooperation.



The event also featured cultural performances showcasing Malaysia’s multicultural heritage and a reception offering guests a taste of Malaysian cuisine. This year’s celebrations underscored Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening regional cooperation, fostering diplomatic ties, and promoting peace and unity in Southeast Asia.
