Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets British Ambassador to Discuss 70th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations


Vientiane: Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane met with British Ambassador Melanie Louise Barlow at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 4, 2025, marking their first official meeting since Mr. Thongsavanh took office.

According to Lao News Agency, this year signifies the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In honor of this milestone, both nations have planned a series of joint activities and aim to hold a celebratory event later in the year.

Established on September 5, 1955, the bilateral relationship has flourished, with cooperation spanning various sectors such as health, education, and the clearance of unexploded ordnance (UXO). The UK has played a vital role in capacity-building initiatives, offering training across different sectors that have significantly benefitted the Lao PDR.

Regular exchanges of official delegations have further strengthened the ties between the two na
tions, enhancing cooperation between ministries and sectors on both sides.
