Vientiane: MRC and India have signed a partnership agreement aimed at bolstering water security and climate resilience in the Mekong region. As the area faces escalating climate risks, frequent floods and droughts, and increasing energy needs, this partnership offers a five-year framework for cooperation on sustainable and inclusive development solutions.
According to Lao News Agency, Mr. Yogeshwar Sangwan, the Indian Ambassador to Lao PDR, stated that the agreement demonstrates India's dedication to enhancing collaboration with the Mekong region through practical and mutually beneficial partnerships. He emphasized the historical and cultural ties between India and the Mekong countries through the Mekong-Ganga relationship, noting that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) builds on this foundation to address future challenges related to water, climate resilience, technology, and sustainable development.
The partnership outlines several areas for collaboration, including water resources development and management, technological applications related to water, climate change and disaster risk management, as well as flood and drought mitigation. It also focuses on flood forecasting, early warning systems, clean energy technology, technical training, institutional cooperation, and community support.
Ms. Busadee Santipitaks, Chief Executive Officer of the MRC Secretariat, highlighted that while the Mekong and the Ganga are distinct rivers, they face interconnected challenges such as climate uncertainty and the need for reliable data. She noted that the MoU offers a practical framework for the exchange of technical knowledge and cooperation to enhance water security and resilience in the region. India's expertise in river basin management, disaster risk reduction, digital technology, and clean energy provides valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange.
The agreement aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Mekong-Ganga cooperation and promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. It underscores the importance of collaboration, technical exchange, and joint activities in areas of mutual interest between the MRC and India.
