Remains of Vietnamese Soldiers Repatriated from Laos in Special Ceremony

Champasak: The remains of 16 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts, who sacrificed their lives during various periods in the Lao provinces of Champasak and Attapeu, have been repatriated to Vietnam following a solemn handover ceremony held in Champasak on May 7.

According to Lao News Agency, the remains were discovered by a special task committee from Kon Tum province, in collaboration with Lao counterparts from Champasak, Sekong, and Attapeu provinces during the 2024-2025 dry season. This coordinated effort highlights the continued cooperation between the two countries in honoring their shared history and sacrifices.

During the ceremony, Y Ngoc, Standing Vice Chairwoman of the Kon Tum provincial People’s Committee, expressed sincere gratitude to the leaders, authorities, special task committees, and local communities for their unwavering support and collaboration in the search and repatriation mission. She emphasized the significant contributions made by Vietnamese volunteers and experts alongside the Lao People’s Armed Forces to the revolutionary endeavors of both nations.

On behalf of the Lao authorities, Sombouttakun, Vice Governor of Champasak, emphasized the importance of the event in fostering and strengthening the long-standing friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam. The mission serves as a testament to the tradition of “remembering the source while drinking water,” symbolizing deep respect and gratitude toward the fallen heroes.

This repatriation not only honors the sacrifices of the past but also serves as a poignant reminder for both nations, especially the younger generations, of the historic and enduring bond between Vietnam and Laos.
