(KPL): From November 10 to 12, 2024, Mr. Samlane Phankhavong, Vice Minister of Education and Sports, led a delegation to Phin district, Savannakhet province, to deliver learning materials, sports equipment, clothing, and essential items to some of the most remote schools in the region. The initiative, supported by the Australian government through the BEQUAL Program, marked a significant step in enhancing education in underserved areas.
According to Lao News Agency, the handover ceremony on November 11 was attended by several dignitaries, including Mr. Sithong Sikhao, Acting Director General of the Department of Planning, representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES), local education officials, and the Deputy Governor of Phin District. Items were donated by MoES, Australian support through BEQUAL, Dongkhamxang Teacher Training College (TTC), and various public and private educational institutions and businesses in Vientiane.
The donations included computers, LCD monitors, textbooks, teach
er guides, notebooks, pens, pencils, sports equipment, and clothing. Financial support from private companies also helped cover travel expenses and purchase additional supplies. The beneficiaries included four primary schools and an ethnic boarding school, aligning with the 30th anniversary of National Teachers’ Day.
During his visit, Mr. Samlane emphasized the importance of quality education as the foundation of a prosperous and peaceful nation. He discussed the implementation of a modern, student-centred teaching approach developed with Australian support and highlighted the use of ICT in education. “The Government of Laos recognises that all children have the right to access good quality education,” he said, thanking contributors for their generosity.
Additionally, a donation of 10,000,000 LAK by the Deputy Director General of the Department of Planning will fund clean water facilities for the ethnic school, addressing a critical hygiene issue for its boarding students. The visit reaffirmed the governmen
t’s commitment to inclusive and equitable education, ensuring no child is left behind.
