Vientiane Introduces 10,000 Kip Bus Fare on Selected Routes Amid Fuel Crisis

Vientiane: Authorities in Vientiane have announced a flat bus fare of 10,000 kip on selected routes as part of government measures to ease the impact of the ongoing fuel crisis. The initiative, implemented by the Vientiane Capital State Bus Enterprise, will apply to three electric bus routes from March 23 through May 30, 2026.

According to Lao News Agency, the initial routes include Sikhai – Sikeut – Morning Market (Route 48), Thangon – BRT Bus Station, Saphangmuek (Route 23), and Nonghai Roundabout – ITECC – BRT Bus Station, Phonekham (Route 40). Two additional routes are scheduled to be introduced starting March 25, covering Laos-China Railway Station – BRT Bus Station, Saphangmuek (Route 28), and Beer Lao Factory Intersection – Dongkhamxang – That Luang – Patuxay – Morning Market Station (Route 20).

Meanwhile, the BRT express service connecting Morning Market and Dongdok will continue to operate free of charge. The measure is designed to reduce transportation costs for residents, encourage a shift away from private vehicle use, and promote environmentally friendly public transport options.

Officials say the initiative also aims to improve accessibility and convenience while supporting broader efforts to manage fuel consumption and urban mobility during the current energy constraints.
