Xieng Khuang’s Yodnammo-Phousamsoum named new National Park

The Prime Minister’s Office signed on Mar 15 a decree designating the Yodnammo-Phousamsoum area in Xieng Khouang Province as a national park in an effort to promote biodiversity protection.

The Yodnammo-Phousamsoum area covers over 98,800 hectares of two districts Mor and Khoun.

Laos hosts unique and globally significant biodiversity. The Greater Annamites, locally known as Sayphoulouang, has the highest concentration of endemic species for a continental area in the world and is ranked as one of the world’s 200 most important bioregions.

The establishment of Laos’ protected area system in the 1990s strongly represents the country’s unique biogeography.

The network of National Protected Areas covers roughly 15 per cent of the country’s total land area.
