Vientiane: The Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), a prominent global university network, has launched a project aimed at combating plastic waste and promoting responsible trade in Laos. The initiative, titled “Strengthening the economic autonomy of market vendors and their commitment to the environment,” seeks to encourage market vendors and customers to abandon single-use plastic bags in favor of more sustainable options.
According to Lao News Agency, the project features a communication campaign named “Without plastic, it’s more chic!” which includes performances by the AK band’s traditional artist troupe, known as mo lam. These shows, featuring specially crafted songs and dances, invite both market workers and customers to engage in the movement towards using cloth bags and baskets instead of plastic alternatives.
The performances occur every Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Nonkho market and will continue until February 11, 2025. This initiative is supported by funding from the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) and is being executed by AUF. The project targets one of the largest fresh markets in the capital, aiming to reduce the distribution of plastic bags while simultaneously boosting vendors’ sales.
Activities associated with the project are documented by a team of 10 students from the National University of Laos and the University of Health Sciences. This effort not only provides them with training in video reporting but also raises environmental awareness among the youth. Updates and videos related to the project can be accessed on the AUF.
