Deputy Prime Minister Attends ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meetings


Naypyidaw: The ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting recently convened to review progress in community-building efforts within the association, emphasizing that 2026 will mark the beginning of implementing the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and its strategic plans. Additionally, the ministers discussed preparations for commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, also set for 2026.



According to Lao News Agency, the meeting further addressed cooperation with external partners, with Laos, in its role as the country coordinator for ASEAN-Canada relations, reporting on the progress of negotiations regarding the draft ASEAN-Canada Plan of Action for 2026-2030. This highlights an ongoing commitment to strengthening ties between ASEAN and Canada.



During the 31st ASEAN Political-Security Community Council Meeting, ministers assessed the advancements under the political-security pillar. These efforts include combating transnational crime, enhancing defense and legal cooperation, promoting human rights, and implementing the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty. The meeting also reviewed ASEAN’s five-point consensus on Myanmar and the implementation of the ASEAN Political-Security Community Strategic Plan as part of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.



The 38th ASEAN Coordinating Council Meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming 48th ASEAN Summit and related meetings. Key areas of discussion included the agenda, discussion themes, procedures, and draft outcome documents. Ministers also endorsed reports from the ASEAN Secretary-General and ASEAN community councils, which will be submitted to ASEAN leaders for consideration.



At the Joint Meeting between ASEAN Foreign and Economic Ministers, the participants exchanged views on the impact of the Middle East situation, particularly concerning energy and food security. The ministers discussed proactive measures to address these challenges and enhance preparedness for future crises. They also reached an agreement on the content of the ASEAN Leaders’ Statement on Addressing the Crisis in the Middle East, which will be considered for adoption at the 48th ASEAN Summit.
