Champhone: Authorities in Champhone District, Savannakhet Province, officially celebrated the recognition of Ho Tay Pidok Library (Ancient Buddhist Scripts Library) of Nong Lamchan Village and Wat Kao Talaew Temple as National Heritage sites during a ceremony held from March 2-4, 2026.
According to Lao News Agency, the event was organized alongside Champhone District’s traditional Palm Leaf Manuscript Procession, a cultural festival. The ceremony was presided over by Ms. Davone Xaisulian, Chairperson of the Savannakhet Provincial Administration, with participation from provincial and district officials, Buddhist clergy, and local residents.
The Ho Tay Pidok Library is an ancient wooden structure situated in the middle of a lake in Nong Lamchan Village. The site preserves sacred Buddhist scriptures and 219 palm leaf manuscript stories, embodying the district’s religious and literary heritage.
Wat Kao Talaew Temple is noted for its architectural design and mural paintings, which hold artistic and spiritual value.
Officials indicated that the national heritage recognition aims to conserve these landmarks while promoting cultural identity and sustainable tourism.
The celebration included a palm leaf manuscript procession led by monks, officials, and villagers in traditional attire. Cultural performances, including folk dances and khene music, were featured, along with demonstrations of the ‘Phu Tai Spinning Cotton’ lifestyle, showcasing Champhone District’s cultural heritage.
Authorities remarked that the designation elevates the district’s status as a cultural tourism destination, inviting visitors to explore the historic ‘Library on Water,’ admire Wat Kao Talaew Temple, and experience the Palm Leaf Procession festival.
