Vientiane: Laos is gearing up for its annual National Fish and Aquatic Animal Release Day with the preparation of 72 million fingerlings. Mr. Bouahong Khamha, Director General of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, has announced that efforts are in full swing, in collaboration with provincial authorities, Vientiane Capital, and development partners, to ensure the success of this nationwide initiative.
According to Lao News Agency, the department has mobilized resources from 53 government fish hatcheries and breeding stations, more than 163 private hatcheries, and 111 household-based hatchery operations. These efforts aim to produce and supply fingerlings for release into rivers, reservoirs, and other natural water bodies across the nation.
The main event will see the national launch ceremony taking place at Bueng That Luang in Vientiane Capital's Special Economic Zone. Here, approximately 350,000 fingerlings are expected to be released into the expansive 50-hectare wetland.
Mr. Bouahong emphasized Laos's rich freshwater resources, which are home to over 500 native fish species, including endangered ones like the Mekong giant catfish and giant freshwater stingray. Protecting these resources remains a national priority to preserve biodiversity, ecological balance, and sustainable livelihoods.
Since its inception in 1997, the Government has marked July 13 as National Fish and Aquatic Animal Release Day. This observance aims to foster public participation in aquatic conservation and sustainable usage. The annual activities are also designed to enhance environmental awareness, especially among youth and local communities.
Mr. Bouahong urged government agencies, the private sector, and the general public to partake actively in the fish release and conservation efforts. He highlighted the importance of sustainable fisheries management in reinforcing food security, supporting rural livelihoods, and safeguarding the country's rich aquatic ecosystems for future generations.
