Vientiane: Ms Corinne Javary, Communication and Video Production Manager of the Basic Education Quality and Access in Laos (BEQUAL) programme, gave an interview to Lao News Agency on the occasion of the upcoming First National Media Conference. She emphasized the increasing importance of the media amid current economic and educational challenges in Laos. Javary highlighted that raising public awareness regarding the value of basic education is essential, as it is the foundation for building the nation's future. A deeper understanding of its importance encourages families to support their children's learning and contribute to the country's long-term development.
According to Lao News Agency, Ms Javary's work through the BEQUAL programme, led by the Ministry of Education and Sports of the Lao PDR with support from Australia, underscores the role of the media as an effective platform for communicating key education messages. Partnerships with media organisations are crucial in sharing news and progressive ideas that enhance learning opportunities for all children, particularly the most vulnerable. The media also plays a pivotal role in promoting awareness of basic education, inclusive education, gender equality, child protection, and other key development issues.
At the same time, media organisations in Laos face growing challenges in adapting to the digital age, especially with the rapid expansion of social media. Information spreads more quickly than ever, but not all content is accurate or responsible. The rise of fake news, misinformation, and AI-generated misleading images and videos underscores the need for media professionals to verify information carefully, uphold ethical standards, and strengthen public trust. In this evolving media landscape, accuracy and responsibility are as crucial as speed.
Ms Corinne Javary concluded that with strong collaboration, effective communication, and a commitment to truth and public service, the media in Laos can continue to make a significant contribution to the country's development.
