Prime Minister Sonexay Engages in Diplomatic Talks with Crown Prince Akishino


Tokyo: Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, along with his spouse and a high-level delegation, paid an official visit to Crown Prince Akishino and his spouse at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo, as part of his trip to Japan from January 20 to 23, 2025. This visit aimed to reinforce diplomatic ties between Laos and Japan.



According to Lao News Agency, Prime Minister Sonexay expressed his satisfaction in meeting Crown Prince Akishino and reiterated Laos’ dedication to enhancing the longstanding friendship and cooperation with Japan, which has endured for seven decades. He emphasized the objective of advancing the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.



Both leaders acknowledged the progress in Lao-Japanese relations, particularly emphasizing the strong bond between the peoples of both nations. They noted the active cooperation between their governments, political parties, and parliaments, which has resulted in tangible benefits, such as regional development collaboration.



Discussions also focused on furthering cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Among the key topics was the proposal to establish a direct flight between Vientiane and Tokyo to enhance trade, investment, and tourism.



Prime Minister Sonexay expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the Lao government and people for Japan’s continuous support, which has significantly contributed to Laos’ socio-economic development. He highlighted Japan’s contributions to human resource development, public health, agriculture, infrastructure, and the clearance of unexploded ordnance (UXO), as well as its support during Laos’ ASEAN chairmanship in 2024.



Crown Prince Akishino warmly received the Prime Minister and his delegation, expressing high regard for the visit. He conveyed his wishes for the continued success of the Prime Minister’s official trip and the further strengthening of the Japan-Laos strategic partnership.
