Supreme People’s Court of Lao PDR Sets Ambitious 2027 Judicial Goals

Vientiane:The Supreme People's Court of the Lao PDR has announced its strategic targets for 2027, highlighting a year of significant advancements in 2026, particularly in judicial performance, organisational restructuring, and caseload management.

According to Lao News Agency, the annual report was presented by Mr. Phaivy Sibualipha, President of the Supreme People's Court, during the 2nd Ordinary Session of the 10th National Assembly on 9 October. He outlined objectives aimed at modernising and expediting the judicial system of the country.

In 2026, the court managed 13,244 cases, including 3,738 cases from 2025 and 9,506 new filings, resolving 9,597 cases, which is 72.46% of the total. First-instance criminal cases had an 83.49% resolution rate. The Vientiane and Attapeu courts notably handled corruption cases, sentencing 26 defendants to life imprisonment.

The judiciary also focused on political ideology and ethics, sending over 10 officials for higher education and dismissing three for violations.

For 2027, the court aims to resolve at least 75% of civil and commercial cases, 85% of family, labour, juvenile, and administrative cases, and 90% of criminal cases, with appeal rates kept below 15%. Plans include a new regional court in Khammuane Province and a juvenile court office in Vientiane, along with legal amendments and expanded judicial consistency.

Modernisation efforts will concentrate on enhancing document workflows, digital integration, judicial infrastructure, and securing necessary budget allocations.
