Pekalongan: A landslide in Pekalongan, Central Java, Indonesia has claimed at least 16 lives and left 10 others injured, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNBP). Heavy rainfall and strong winds from the night of January 20 to the morning of January 21 led to flash floods and landslides, with Petungkriono being the most severely affected.
According to Lao News Agency, rescue, search, and evacuation efforts are currently underway. Local authorities have advised residents to exercise caution and avoid areas near rivers. The situation has prompted increased vigilance as the community grapples with the aftermath of the natural disaster.
Earlier, the city of Cirebon in West Java and its surrounding areas experienced severe flooding on the night of January 17. The floods submerged thousands of homes and forced many residents to evacuate. Acting Mayor of Cirebon, Agus Mulyadi, stated that this was one of the worst floods the city has faced in the past five years. The water arrived suddenly, leaving many residents unable to save their belongings.
