Lao Women’s Union Plans Extensive Celebrations for 115th Anniversary of International Women’s Day


Vientiane: The Lao Women’s Union (LWU) is preparing to host a series of events to honor the 115th anniversary of International Women’s Day, celebrated from March 8, 1910, to March 8, 2025. The theme for this milestone is “Rights, Equality, and Strength for All Women and Girls.”

According to Lao News Agency, Ms. Aly Vongnorbountham, President of the LWU Executive Committee, highlighted the significance of the occasion and shared the Union’s detailed plan to ensure participation nationwide. The committee has directed various organizational levels, including the Central Executive Committee, provincial and Vientiane women’s unions, and ministry-level bodies, to organize events and activities.

The planned activities include events at different levels of women’s unions that will focus on the history of International Women’s Day, past collaborations with international partners, and future strategic directions. The celebrations will feature lectures and seminars on women’s rights, legal protections for women and ch
ildren, gender equality laws, and the 12 critical areas of concern outlined in the Beijing Declaration.

Cultural and educational events will also be part of the celebrations, featuring competitions in literature and the arts, sports events, and exhibitions showcasing handicrafts, agricultural products, and other local specialties. Awareness campaigns will include informational sessions and quizzes on women’s achievements and history to engage the public.

The LWU has scheduled two significant events in Vientiane. The “Walk for Health,” under the theme “Rights, Equality, and Strength for All Women and Girls,” will be held on March 1, 2025, at Patuxay, promoting both physical well-being and gender equality. Additionally, a National Seminar titled “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment” is planned for March 5, 2025. This seminar will gather key stakeholders, including government representatives, civil society, and international partners, focusing on strengthening policies that support women
‘s development and enhancing cooperation across society.

Ms. Vongnorbountham stressed that this year’s celebrations aim to increase awareness throughout society, encouraging greater involvement from government entities, men in families and organizations, and international partners. She underscored the importance of creating opportunities for women to actively participate in national development and fostering an environment where Lao women can succeed in modern society.

By promoting confidence, leadership, and recognition of women’s contributions, the LWU aims to reinforce its commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls throughout Laos.
